Lower Jaw Retrusion
It is quite common for the lower jaw to fall behind. It may be genetic or may be caused by jaw development due to accidents and diseases.
What is Retrogene and Microgene?
In the evaluation of the lower jaw, the condition of the teeth is looked at first, so that the closure of the upper and lower jaw teeth may be problematic, such as the lower jaw teeth may be behind the place where it should be. Such a situation can be revealed immediately in the first examination and special films are taken for the evaluation of the condition. As a result, the lower jaw may be left behind (Retrogene), the upper jaw is ahead, and the jaw may appear relatively back or both jaws may appear at the back side.
Sometimes the teeth and the lower jaw are in their normal position, but the end part of the lower jaw is small (Microgene)
Treatment Methods
In the case of retrogene, lower jaw is positioned ahead with orthodontic dental treatment for a period of time and then jaw surgery and jaw lengthening procedures may be applied.
In the case of the microgene, it is usually sufficient to simply enlarge the jaw tip. This can be achieved by advancing the bone at the jaw tip or, more easily, by an implant placement at the jaw tip.
Implant to the Jaw Tip
Implants (jaw tip prosthesis) placed at the jaw tip can be very diverse, but the most commonly used materials are silicone and Med-por prostheses. Apart from the model which is placed only in jaw tip, there are also some winged models placed in bilateral sides of the jaw.
The appropriate size of the selected prosthesis is usually placed on the jaw tip with local anaesthesia. The prosthesis can be placed through the mouth or externally from the lower part of the chin, so that the procedure is completed in 30 minutes. No scar remains in the prosthesis placed thorough the mouth and jaw-tip swelling starts decreasing gradually after 3-4 days, then the person returns to his/her normal life.
Lower jaw enlargement is usually combined with a small liposuction intervention to the jowl area, so that very impressive results can be achieved in just 45 minutes. Sometimes it is selected as a complementary procedure in nasal aesthetics and supports the facial profile.
