Gynecomastia – Breast Enlargement in Men

Breast growth in men is called gynecomastia. Gynecomastia can be single or bilateral.

Although the reason is not known exactly, it is thought that there may be more than one reason. It is generally thought to be caused by an imbalance in hormones.

Gynecomastia, which occurs in adolescents, disappears in the majority of cases within a few years. It often causes social and psychological problems.

There are three main types: glandular, lipomatous and mixed type. Growth is caused by the real breast tissue in glandular type while it is caused by fat tissue in lipomatous type. In mixed condition, there is an increase in the breast tissue and an increase in the fat tissue.

Gynecomastia Treatment

When the breast ultrasound is carried out, it is understood whether the mammary gland or fat tissue is too high. Treatment method changes accordingly and it is generally surgical.

When idiopathic gynecomastia (without hormonal cause) is diagnosed, breasts can be reduced with an aesthetic operation in glandular type. It is mostly performed with an incision surrounding the lower half of the nipple, and the scar remains here. It is sometimes helpful to add liposuction to get the best result in the mixed type. After 2-3 days, the drains are removed. The mean postoperative recovery period is 1 week. It may be useful to use special corsets for 3-4 weeks. Liposuction may be sufficient if it is lipomatous type. This procedure is much shorter and can be performed with local anaesthesia or sedation. Then it is appropriate to use a corset for a few weeks.

Gynecomastia surgery (male breast enlargement correction) gives very good results when performed in the appropriate indication.
