Hair Loss
Male-type Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia)
In men, hair loss is usually associated with the male hormone and can show a genetic transition. This is called androgenetic alopecia. Rotation of testosterone in the body to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in androgenetic alopecia results in loss of sensitive hair follicles.
Male-type hair loss is one of the most common types of hair loss: the forehead hair line slips backwards, the hair is markedly thinner (miniaturization). Bald areas might appear on the top of thehead as well. Sensitivity and genetic factors are involved in male hormones. Stress also increases the tendency to hair loss.
This type of hair loss can be slowed by appropriate medication, and the only effective treatment for hair loss is the hair transplantation.
Female-type Hair Loss
Hair loss in women may be due to many different reasons; iron, copper, zinc deficiency, thyroid hormone irregularity, ovarian cysts, androgen hormone excess and so on. Therefore, first of all, the approach of physicians who are specialized in this subject is necessary. Male-type hair loss caused by the male hormone may sometimes be present in women. It starts earlier in men, later in women, but it is much faster in women.
General Information
There are many other reasons for temporary and permanent hair loss. Scalp diseases such as ringworm, lichen etc, tractional alopecia, trichotillomania, chemotherapy, telogen effluvium, externally used some hair dyes and etc.
Telogen hair loss (Telogen Effluvium) is one of the most common types of hair loss. It happens when the hair which is in the growth phase (anagen stage) quickly gets into rest period (telogen phase). It often starts suddenly. Over time, hair loss severity gets reduced and it might take 6-8 months.
Ringworm disease (Alopecia Areata) makes hair loss in the form of round areas. It happens mostly in the adolescence period, the reason is unknown, immunological problems and stress might be the reasons. It can be treated with medication. It usually regresses in 1,5 years but resistant types last longer, might be resistant to the treatment as well.
Use of unsuitable hair cosmetics, tying the hair over the head tightly (tractional alopecia), radiation therapy, syphilis, trichotillomania (a type of hair loss characterized by damage to the person's own hair), some systemic diseases, skin cancers, chemical-thermal burns, lichen etc. skin diseases cause irreversible hair loss. In these cases, the hair roots are completely damaged.
A person suffering from hair loss should definitely consult a doctor. Otherwise, hair loss can be permanent. International hair restoration surgery associations are constantly informing ISHRS and ESHRS member physicians about the causes of hair loss.
Can Hair Loss Be Decelerated?
Hair Transplantation is the process of transporting healthy and strong hair follicles from the healthy area, usually from the back of the head to the weak or lacking region.
In the modern sense, hair transplantation is done by FUT and FUE methods as in the form of follicular units. In FUT method, a hairy stripe is taken from the nape and live hair follicles are extracted individually from this stripe in the form of follicular units.
The scar on the nape is covered with sutures and concealed in an invisible way.
In FUE method, live follicular units are taken one by one from the neck. Since hair follicles are taken as scattered, no scar is visible on the nape. In both methods, transplantation way is the same; small canals are opened in the transplantation area and these follicles are transplanted one by one.
A follicular unit may contain 1,2 or 3 live roots. For example, if 1500 follicular units (grafts) were transplanted, it is understood that an average of 3000 hair fibres were transplanted, as some of them contained 2 and 3 roots.
